Let's go deeper with a question and have a self connection, shall we?
Have you ever seen a fly go through a window?
If your answer is no, that's great because they can't.
However, I'm gonna guess that you've seen a lot of flies try. Right? I know I have. I mean, there you are. You're in your apartment, your house, your office, wherever, and you hear that buzzing off in the distance. And you get up to go investigate it and you get to the window, you pull the curtains back and of course there is a fly trying to get outside.
And then it moves over to a new section of the window. I mean this fly will try every part of that window just trying to get outside. Now you might be one of those really do gooder type people and you might even try to help the fly.
You know, you grab a newspaper and you start to whoosh it towards the open door or maybe you're super committed and you grab a cup and like you try to cup the fly and then get a piece of paper behind it so you can pick the fly up and let it free. Look, no matter what the situation may be, we've all seen these flies buzzing against the window trying to get out and you can't help but feel bad for them.
In fact, in those situations I always find myself just wishing that flies spoke a little more English because if they did I could just walk up to the fly and say dude, there's an open window on the other side of the apartment. All you have to do is turn around and you can be free. I mean you've got wings, it'll take you no time at all.
Of course the fly never listens and then you come back to the window the next day, you look down on the windowsill, what do you see? You see a dead fly. We've all seen it. Now whenever I see this though, I can't help but think, don't we as human beings do the same thing?
I mean don't we bang our own heads against our own proverbial window over and over again trying to get to some place that we want to get to? We just think to ourselves, this is the approach I have to take. I am gonna make this job work. I am gonna make this relationship work.
I am going to make this place where I live in this town work. Damn it. And we keep banging our heads against the exact same window that these flies do and we go through a lot of the same things. As we're going through it, we find ourselves feeling exhausted. We get to the point where we end up having all kinds of other problems like bad sleep or bad headaches or we even have mental health challenges.
We have depression or stress or anxiety, and in some cases it even leads us to developing a disease within our bodies, which in some cases even leads us to death. We are the ones that are doing this to ourselves and when we see a fly do it we feel sorry for the fly, but yet we don't feel sorry for ourselves because we don't see that we're doing the exact same thing.
My friend, my message to you right now is this, if you find yourself in that situation, you have to realize that you can be the fly and keep banging your head against that exact same window until it kills you or you can turn around and be free.
Much love,
Stuart
